Life EMS Academy
Life EMS Academy was created in 1999 in response to a need seen by Life Ambulance Service, Inc, to meet the EMS education needs of local EMS services, First Responder Organizations and the community. At that time EMS training in the area was not offered in a format that was available for individuals considering a change in careers. Classes were offered at other institutions but during the day. Since an individual typically worked during the day, their opportunity to take an EMS course was non-existent. Life EMS Academy filled that void by offering EMT courses in the evening and on Saturdays. A typical class schedule was Monday and Wednesday evening from 6:00 pm until 10: 00 pm, and two (2) Saturdays a month from 9:00 am until 1: 00 pm.
In March 2004, Life EMS Academy received approval by the Texas Department of Health to conduct EMT-Intermediate and Paramedic courses as an Advanced EMS Education Program. With curriculum, lesson plans, and knowledge objectives based upon the EMT-Intermediate 85 and 1998 Paramedic Department of Transportation objectives, classes began. This once again filled a need for EMS personnel in the area wishing to advance their career by pursuing EMT-I or Paramedic certification. The program continued to teach the EMT-Intermediate 85 and 1998 Paramedic curriculum until the latter part of 2009. At that time the program, in response to changing national EMS education requirements and in an effort to give its students the best educational possible, adopted the 2009 National EMS Education Standards.
In 2011, Life EMS Academy hired its current Program Coordinator and began to seek a consortium sponsorhip agreement with an entity that met the requirements of the Standards and Guidelines of COAEMSP in order to attain COAEMSP accreditation. In March 2012, an Advsory Committee was formed, and in July 2012, an offical Consortium Agreement was signed between Life EMS Academy and El Paso County ESD 2.
In the beginning of 2016, the consortium secured an articulation agreement with Missouri Southern State University (MSSU), giving Paramedic students 30 hours of credit towards their Bachelors of Science Health Sciences - Paramedic.
Life EMS Academy/El Paso County ESD 2 Consortium also received the COAEMSP LSSR Letter of Review from CoAEMSP in November 2012 and look forward to the site visit in January 2017.
CoAEMSP Letter of Review:
"The Life EMS Academy/El Paso County ESD #2 Consortium Paramedic program has been issued a Letter of Review by the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP). This letter is NOT a CAAHEP accreditation status, it is a status signifying that a program seeking initial accreditation has demonstrated sufficient compliance with the accreditation Standards through the Letter of Review Self Study Report (LSSR) and other documentation. Letter of Review is recognized by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) for eligibility to take the NREMT's Paramedic credentialing examination(s). However, it is NOT a guarantee of eventual accreditation.
